Editorial Policy

How we research and maintain Canadian mortgage information

Purpose and Scope

Mortgage Tools Canada publishes educational calculators and guides about Canadian mortgages, home buying, renewals, refinancing and related household-finance topics. We are not a lender, mortgage brokerage, law firm, accounting firm or government agency, and our content is not personalized financial, legal or tax advice.

Primary Sources First

For rules and program details, we prioritize official and primary sources. Depending on the topic, these include the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Bank of Canada, Canada Revenue Agency, Department of Finance Canada and provincial or territorial governments.

Review and Freshness

Pages carry a review date when a substantive rules/content review has occurred. We do not intentionally change a review date simply because the calendar year changed. The site-wide content review date is currently 2026-09-30. Individual pages may have a more specific date.

Mortgage rules, tax programs and lender practices can change between reviews. Where a page uses live public data, such as a Bank of Canada reference series, the observation date is shown separately from the editorial review date.

Calculator Standards

Standard mortgage calculators are tested against Canadian mortgage conventions and the published rules described on our Calculator Methodology page. Results are planning estimates and do not replace lender underwriting or legal/tax advice.

Advertising and Editorial Independence

The site may display advertising, including Google AdSense. Advertising does not determine our calculator formulas or editorial conclusions. Sponsored or paid material, if introduced in the future, should be clearly distinguished from editorial content.

Corrections

If you find an error, please contact us with the page URL and the specific information you believe should be reviewed. Material corrections should update the relevant page content and review date.

Limitations

Canada has federal, provincial, territorial, municipal, lender-specific and insurer-specific rules. We aim to explain common rules clearly, but a calculator or guide cannot capture every exception. Verify important decisions with the appropriate government source, lender and qualified professional.
